*Stone works (Formative Beauty) are also carried forward as expressions within a palette of available successful formations that convey information of ‘how to see’ a garden, ie: Kamakura era stone-setting as used in the Heiwa Teien, New Denver, B.C. by Roy Sumi, and carried forward to the M Residence garden in Vegreville Alberta. The gardens are therefore related through the stone setting technique used, providing the owner with subtle hometown memory. This is a well-known mnemonic technique that is often used to relate a famous location to a personalized garden (scroll gardens).
Gardens: Private
Unabashedly we should say that we are committed to gardens, fine gardens, gardens that induce restoration of heart and soul: healing, refreshing memories, creating pauses from the Outside madness.
Our daily lives are inundated with a minimum of 3000 items per day that necessitates a respite to an artistic oasis that simplifies and soothes the mind.
Gardens should induce rest, refresh one’s sense of stillness, rhythm, orchestrated movement, visual beauty while providing aromatherapy for the body, mind and spirit.
We are committed to exceptional gardens, whether through design, construction, with maintenance or through development.
Are we passionate about building the best garden we can? Absolutely!
•Gardens are an investment in the self: carbon sinks, air purifiers, oxygen producers.
•Gardens are an investment increasing property values through trees & shrubs artfully maintained and cared for.
•Gardens are an investment buffering our memories and lives through stress management (etcetera).
•Gardens & Trees are memory. Landscape is memory.
Fuzei gardens articulate an elegant beauty, a rhythm - a pattern responded too on a subconscious level, interweaving landscape and nature that is, on a practical level, mindful urban design: living spaces with purpose. Fuzei Gardens & Tree Services Ltd., employ & utilize Japanese garden techniques and practises as the underlying threads that interweave the art of nature with the clients needs, reflected as a commentary resolving the urban interface of the mundane ‘outside’ and the sanctuary of ‘inside’ space.
“Mother Nature is the Foundation” H Okusa
Hiro Okusa, Japonica Landscaping, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, mentor and friend also states the following in regard to a well-designed and articulated garden:
"There is no distinct boundary between garden and surrounding landscape. The two combine so that every aspect of the landscape is in itself, the garden. The unification of landscape and garden is meant to soothe and relax the viewer."

One of the primary visionaries expressing these latest changes that became the prototypical artistic form was Jihei Ogawa. In turn others such as Kenzo Ogata continued expressing the changing needs of society and garden beauty, and, offered tutelage to present day frontrunners of garden design such as Hiro Okusa. Another student of Ogata sensei is Hoichi Kurisu whose considerable energies have brought the restorative aspects of Japanese gardens to the fore in this current era.
Japanese gardens are restorative garden spaces, even if only through the simple growth of a seedling. With todays science we now know that they are much more than that, and that the basis of the restorative qualities are founded in the placed pattern organization as well as the plant materials used as well as in the shapes that they are used in. The entire, the whole ‘holistic’ approach is beneficial for mankind’s life, via the beauty and atmospheres created.
A way of visualizing the Beauty of atmosphere is as feelings (Abstract Beauty) expressed within the Japanese garden working as an orchestrated symphony, conducted and choreographed such that all of our emotions are engaged across all the senses. Add to this a sense of season and time combining personal meaning, memory, and the result becomes a refined composition that constitutes the modern Japanese garden.
In overview the Japanese garden has always been and should always be, a duet between landscape and architecture, nature and man, abstract and formative beauty wherein the resultant outcome evokes a beauty of space.
